Sammy is doing 2 things, wanting to share with you (that’s why its left for you) and also trying to protect you from being infiltrated by a bunch or rodents. If the cat is killing that much, imagine how much the cat ISN’T killing………that is probably in your walls and roof!

Hey thanks for the response,
Sammy is mostly an outdoor cat and has alot of free ‘roaming’ space to find things. I don’t think they are inside my house as we just had a rodent inspector come out the other day. I was getting worried that we had a problem after seeing what Sammy was bringing in. Thanks for telling me whats going on though! Much appreciation.

I found this online. thought it might answer your question:

killing and eating prey is a learned behavior. As soon as a kittens eyes open (about 10 days after birth) they begin learning by exploring and experimenting. Kittens become hunters by observing and imitating. A mother cat will begin weaning her kittens at around 8 weeks. At that time the kittens are able to climb, run, jump, and they’ve already mastered the art of the chase and the attack by practicing on each other. Around this time a mother cat will bring prey that she has already killed and will eat it in the presence of her kittens. The next time, she will bring dead prey but leave it for her kittens to consume. Finally, a mother cat will bring home live prey and allow her kittens to kill and eat it.

Many people believe that when their cat brings them dead prey, they are bringing them a “gift”. That is not the case at all! What they are doing is trying to teach you how to hunt. They are saying…here is some food for you…eat it.

Nice yet scary picture at the same time! thanks for sharing. =)

You’re not crazy! The reason you’re cat is killing things and leaving them for you is because it;s his way of showing his love… And if he is an outside cat what he does is just pure instinct… Even indoor cats that have never been outside like mine will kill if let out only once… It’s normal don’t worry about it.

My cat is hunter too. It drives me crazy because I had rats for pets long before I had cats. I adopted two cats, one adult, one kitty. The big cat wouldn’t hurt a fly, but the little one learned to hunt from another cat when he was a kitty. He started binging us live baby mice and we kept trying to save them and set them free. As time went by he got tougher and started bringing more injured, larger animals. After a while we stopped seeing them. I wasn’t sure if we let him know we didn’t like it by setting them free or if he stared eating them, but I recently found a mouse head in my laundry so aparently he’s eating them. I guess that’s better then just abusing them and leaving them on my kitchen floor. If you really want him to stop, I would try taking them away from him as soon as you see them. Maybe he’ll realize you don’t like it and at least leave the body parts outside!

Woof Sammy

Desert Pups here and even though we’re of the canine variety we appreciate a good rodent killer. Great photos, made our Mom scream. Keep up the good work.
